Artificial Intelligence Mission Austria (AIM AT) funding initiative
Project Goals
Edge AI further develops the vision of intelligent networked devices in that devices are equipped with “on-site intelligence” and, through clever distribution of data and algorithms, can act not only autonomously and with foresight, but also in fail-safe, performant, energy-efficient ways and in compliance with data protection regulations. The endowed professorship in computer science with a focus on Edge AI will be part of the Department of Computer Science and can be filled both in a technology-oriented manner from edge computing or in an algorithm-oriented manner from machine learning.
The endowed professorship expands the existing research groups into a competence cluster by building a bridge between the topics of edge, IoT, ML, software engineering, security, and privacy. This competence cluster is outstanding because it takes an end-to-end quality-driven view of intelligent networked systems, thus contributing to science, economy and society by bringing this future generation of systems to application in a controllable, value-based way.
This submission is strongly supported by the innovation leaders in Western Austria in core industries such as construction, medical technology and traffic engineering, as well as by the professional associations and the province of Tyrol. This underpins the great importance attached to this professorship for the further development of the economy in this region. Furthermore, the endowed professorship Edge AI fits ideally into the structure of the interdisciplinary research area Digital Science Center (DiSC) at the University of Innsbruck. At the DiSC, the endowed professorship expands the existing ML competencies, which are carried across the breadth of scientific disciplines, and also promotes discussions on the societal impact of artificial intelligence.
Beyond industrial applications, the University of Innsbruck as a full university offers an optimal environment for the future application of “smart” sensors to reach a new level of evidence-based understanding of our world. This potential extends to diverse branches of science, including ecology, geology, atmospheric sciences and civil engineering. Research successes already achieved on the basis of sensor networks in high mountain regions illustrate the promises for the future. They open up broad fields of action to strengthen Austria as a science location and to solve societal challenges.
